Cheaze & A Tipple?

A question we always get asked at the Christmas dinner table is "What is the best drink to have with my cheese." Here is some advice on what drink to choose with your cheese of choice.

Well it’s certainly down to personal preference – and let’s face it, when presented with a cheese board (if you still have room), half the fun is trying all the available wine and spirits to see which is the best pairing.

Here at Cheaze HQ we did just that, and I’m sure those hangovers will finish any day soon.

So we’ll try and provide you with some easy to remember tips to help you on your way.

Usual way is lighter the flavour of cheese – lighter the wine and stronger the cheese – the heavier the wine/port

So if you’re tucking into Brie, Camembert and Goats Cheese – try a white like a Chardonnay, Reisling or Sauvignon Blanc. The light fruity notes of the white will blend with the mild and usually creamier flavours of the cheese for perfect fit.

For harder stronger cheeses like Cheddar, Continental cheeses look for more full bodied wines like Pinot Noir, Merlot or a Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine has to match up to the cheese and vice versa otherwise one can dominate the other – look for that perfect blend to help complement each other.

When it comes to blue cheese, most would plump for a port……and this is a sound choice, but if you’re feeling adventurous why not try a Tawny port or a sweet dessert wine! The sweetness in the port/dessert wine blends fantastically with piquant blue for unbelievable flavour.

If drinking sparkling Champagne or Prosecco – it tends to go with everything, especially blue cheese….it must be the bubbles. Off the wall for an aperitif with some Parmesan and Balsamic vinegar.

Serve your board with some fruit to cleanse the pallete inbetween cheeses – why not place some grapes in the Freezer before the Turkey is ready and when serving they are like fruit sorbet when eaten.

Remember to enjoy the experience and let us know via our social media (Facebook, Instagram) which worked. Have a Great Christmas and remember to drink (but not eat cheese) responsibly.
